I always loved imperfect heroines in books. A character who doesn’t always overcome every obstacle but maybe breaks a bit in a human way.

The Code Of Blood - Dark Vampire Romance

Thinking back, I remember reading the Hunger Games trilogy in one weekend, as I had just finished watching Catching Fire in the cinema and wanted to know what happened to Peeta. So I went home, bought all three books and started reading from the beginning, falling completely in love with how Katniss was written. Especially book three and how she deals with her trauma left a deep impression. Years later, I still think about it, reread the books, and catch something new about Katniss I like. It’s her ability to adapt, but also break and yet still persevere, that made the character so real for me.

When I started writing The Code of Blood, a dark dystopian vampire romance book, I wanted my character, Marianne, to reflect the different aspects that make a woman, a human, a person.

I wanted her to have rough edges, a past that was grey if not dark, and pose the question: how does someone, no matter how strong they are, react when they are pushed to a breaking point? Here, it is very much in a fantasy setting, 200 years in the future, but I think we can all find ourselves at such a point.

I also asked myself when I was writing: what kind of person do you turn into? Do you change? Go back to who you were? Do you get stronger? Or accumulate more scars that might or might not help you move forward?
